Vice President of Operations

Retail Warehouse/Distribution

THE COMPANY

Our client is a specialty retailer headquartered in Michigan. The company is a dominant regional player in its category. With roughly 1,300 employees across a portfolio of retail locations, a distribution center, and a growing e-commerce presence, the business has built a strong reputation for customer service, delivery, and community engagement. The company operates multiple retail formats under a single ownership structure. It is in the midst of its most ambitious growth phase in recent history, the company has a strong culture that values integrity, teamwork, innovation, and tenacity. The executive team is collaborative, transparent, and collegial.

THE OPPORTUNITY

As the company moves aggressively into a new chapter of multi-market, multi-format growth, ownership has decided to recruit a Vice President of Operations. This individual will serve as the company’s operational leader, responsible for translating a bold growth vision into the infrastructure, processes, and people systems needed to execute it. The company has thrived and seeks someone who understands how to scale without losing what made the business great. This is a rare opportunity to step into a high-impact role at a profitable, privately held company with strong ownership commitment and genuine growth momentum. The right candidate will be both a strategic thinker as well as a hands-on operator, comfortable building as much as managing, equally at home on the warehouse floor and on the leadership team.

This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and has five direct reports.

JOB DEFINITION

The Vice President of Operations will be both a builder and an operator — an executive who can hold a complex, fast-moving business together today while architecting the systems and team needed to support growth. The ideal candidate is a self-starting, humble leader with a track record of leading warehouse and distribution operations, demonstrating the ability to develop strong teams, optimize operations, and support a company’s culture. They will implement enabling technology and drive consistent customer-facing outcomes. This is not a role for a pure strategist; operational credibility and hands-on engagement are essential. Equally important is the ability to earn the team’s trust, operate with high integrity in a culture-first organization, and function as a genuine partner to the leadership team rather than simply an executor of directives. The successful candidate will be energized by ambiguity, motivated by growth, and ready to leave a visible, lasting mark on a company with a long history and a significant runway ahead.

SKILLS

The Vice President of Operations will serve as the senior operational executive responsible for optimizing and leading the end-to-end operational infrastructure that enables the company to operate efficiently and scale profitably.

  • Operations management: Lead and supervise all functions within the operations department, including warehouse operations, delivery operations, and process optimization.
  • Champion continuous improvement and lean transformation, making the warehouses efficient, operational, and optimized.
  • Cross-functional leadership and partnership: Serve as a key member of the executive team, bridging sales, merchandising, finance, HR, and technology to ensure the company’s operations and growth are supported by the infrastructure and people to deliver on them.
  • Distribution management: Direct the movement of product from vendor to warehouse to customer, with particular attention to the scheduled delivery capabilities that differentiate the brand in the marketplace.
  • Workforce scalability: Build the staffing models, training frameworks, and management structures needed to grow the organization without sacrificing culture or performance standards.
  • Develop and document systems, processes, and procedures, establishing foundational standards and ensuring consistent compliance.
  • Implement key KPIs and measurements, and communicate them clearly to the team, explaining the “why” behind them.
  • Customer experience standards: Define and hold the enterprise accountable to measurable service outcomes across every customer touchpoint — in-store, at delivery, and through post-sale resolution.
  • Technology and systems integration: Partner with internal stakeholders to evaluate, implement, and optimize operational systems — inventory, POS, delivery routing, and warehouse management — and ensure their proper utilization.
  • Inventory and merchandise operations: Manage the flow and accuracy of product across warehouse and retail locations, in partnership with merchandising leadership, to ensure the right product is in the right place at the right time.
  • Vendor and logistics partnerships: Manage relationships and contracts with third-party delivery partners and operational vendors, ensuring the external ecosystem keeps pace with internal growth and brand commitments around speed and reliability.
  • Financial stewardship of operations: Own the operating budget, identifying inefficiencies, modeling cost implications of growth decisions, and ensuring the business scales profitably.
  • Manage labor utilization, fleet performance, and operational costs to achieve budgetary and service goals.
  • Lead the operational end of new store launches.

Leadership and Management:

  • Act as a visible leader across warehouse, delivery, and customer experience teams, fostering accountability, consistency, and a culture of operational discipline.
  • Lead, develop, and hold accountable a multi-layered operations team across both corporate and field levels.
  • Build and retain high-performing teams in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment by coaching and developing high-performing managers and supervisors across all operational functions.
  • Invest in developing direct reports and building internal bench strength, as well as recruiting new team members.

  • P&L accountability and financial fluency; experience managing operational budgets.
  • High EQ and ability.
  • Based in or willing to relocate to the greater Detroit, Michigan metropolitan area.
  • A sense of humor and a positive attitude.

Education:
• Bachelor’s degree required, in Business, Operations Management, Supply Chain, or a related field preferred. An MBA or advanced degree is a plus, but not required in lieu of a strong, relevant operational track record.
