THE OPPORTUNITY

Our client is seeking an experienced technology leader to help shape the next chapter of the company’s growth by optimizing and advancing its technology infrastructure, capabilities, and team. The Vice President of Technology (VP of Tech) will provide strategic and tactical leadership for the company’s technology function. This newly created role represents a unique opportunity to partner directly with the executive leadership team, serving as the central voice in defining the organization’s technology vision while building a cohesive, forward-thinking IT function that operates as a true business partner. The VP of Tech will play a critical role in strengthening the company’s technology foundation while supporting a high performing culture that values unwavering commitment, humility, safety, integrity, and grit. The VP of Tech will help shape a service-oriented technology strategy that drives alignment across the organization, enhances operations, and ensures technology remains a powerful enabler of the company’s long-term success.

This position reports to the President and currently has 4 direct reports.

JOB DEFINITION

The VP of Tech must be a “roll-up-your-sleeves” leader capable of developing and implementing an enterprise IT strategy aligned with the company’s values and strategy. The ideal candidate must demonstrate a commitment to advancing the broader interests of the company, prioritizing what is best for the enterprise as a whole over individual or departmental priorities. This role will serve as the bridge between field operations, business functions, and executive leadership translating business needs into practical, reliable technology solutions that support project management, estimating, equipment management, safety, and shared services. This leader must be relationship driven, building partnerships with leadership, departments, and teams to ensure technology aligns with real-world work environments that improve productivity and reduce risk without adding unnecessary complexity.

  • Serve as the company’s senior technology leader, partnering closely with executive leadership and business teams to align technology with business strategy, ensuring every investment drives measurable value.
  • Function as the primary internal point of accountability for all technology decisions and outcomes.
  • Becomes ingrained in understanding the business operations to make recommendations about how technology solutions can help streamline business processes and technology infostructure.

  • Owns day-to-day IT operations, ensuring systems are reliable, secure, and available across field and office environments; Plans, directs and manages the IT department, ensuring the development and implementation of cost-effective and efficient systems to meet current and future business requirements.
  • Establishes IT policies, standards and practices, and security measures to ensure effective and consistent information processing to safeguard company information resources.
  • Directs the continuous improvement of the IT staff/department, equipment, and procedures to maintain pace with business needs, technological progress, and economic change.
  • Partners and maintains effective communications with internal and external business operations to solve problems in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Maximizes internal and external IT resources. Identifies when external/ancillary resources are necessary and manages the engagement of ongoing performance.
  • Maintains knowledge of developments in AI, working to define and execute a practical AI integration and automation strategy.
  • Evaluates emerging technologies, including AI, automation, and advanced analytics, to identify practical applications that improve productivity, decision-making, and operational efficiency.
  • Partners with leadership and business teams to pilot and implement targeted AI-enabled solutions where they deliver measurable value and ensure established governance and responsible use practices for AI, data security, and information management.
  • Manages relationships with technology vendors, managed service providers, and the vCIO.
  • Collaborates with external vCIO to shape, refine, and execute the company’s technology strategy and roadmap and implement practical, prioritized initiatives aligned with operations and business needs.
  • Partners with vCIO/vCSO to establish and maintain cybersecurity, data protection, and disaster recovery practices in coordination with internal teams and vendors.
  • Ensures effective deployment, adoption, and ongoing support of operations, engineering, and field technologies, including project management, mobile tools, timekeeping, equipment tracking, safety, and quality systems.
  • Willingly invests time in the field with key stakeholders to deeply understand current technology challenges and translate those insights into practical solutions.
  • Leads change management, education, training, and adoption efforts to maximize return on technology investments.
  • Builds and oversees infrastructure needed to support the service model, networks, devices, cloud platforms, and end-user support.
  • Ensures integration and data flow across all core business applications and systems.
  • Improves data quality, reporting, and visibility to support operational and financial decision-making.
  • Partners with business leaders to deliver actionable insights without over-engineering solutions.
  • Oversees technology budgets, contracts, and performance against agreed outcomes.
  • Establishes governance, standards, and prioritization processes to ensure technological efforts align with business value.

BACKGROUND EXPERIENCE

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in technology leadership roles, preferably within construction, engineering, or manufacturing in multi-site/multi-state locations with remote/dispersed workforce; self-perform construction experience is strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience partnering with business and operations leaders to deliver practical technology solutions that improve productivity, efficiency, and risk management.
  • Experience driving digital transformation initiatives, leveraging cloud technologies, and implementing data-driven decision-making.
  • Hands-on leader with a strong commitment to mentorship, talent development, and team alignment, demonstrating high emotional intelligence and self-awareness in leading and inspiring people, and building high-performing teams.
  • Broad knowledge of modern IT environments, including cloud platforms, infrastructure, cybersecurity, end-user support, and enterprise/ERP applications (construction systems familiarly is preferred).
  • Experience working directly with CIO/CTO, external vCIO, or advisory partner, translating technology strategy into actionable plans and accountable execution.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead internal teams, manage vendors and budgets, and establish technology governance and priorities.
  • Business- and ROI-oriented mindset with the ability to communicate clearly with non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven success in managing IT infrastructure, IT budgets, software development, and systems architecture.
  • Must be a strategic thinker with the ability to translate business objectives into effective technology strategies.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading large-scale technology projects, delivering results on time and within budget.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to leverage data and insights for informed decision-making.
  • Solution oriented with a get-it-done mentality and establish self as credible strategic business partner. Executive presence with the ability to effectively drive change across all levels of the organization.
  • Must have an entrepreneurial mindset, a passion for tactical business execution and thrive in an action-packed growth-fueled atmosphere.
  • Proven ability interacting with and influence all levels of an organization with an open, honest and respectful communication style tailored to the audience.

  • Requires 30% travel in the first 12 months and 20% or less thereafter.

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems/management information systems; advanced degree and certifications are a plus but not required.
