THE OPPORTUNITY

As a member of the leadership team, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) will be responsible for the leadership and all day-to-day operations and management of projects while playing an integral part in managing the growth of the company. Responsibilities will be broad inclusive of providing leadership in establishing and improving efficiencies, processes, and procedures within the organization. This newly created position was developed in answer to companywide growth and will help to motivate, coach, mentor and develop a cohesive team capable of exceeding customer expectations with quality work that is on time and on budget. This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer with five direct reports.

JOB DEFINITION

The ideal candidate will have experience in the construction industry and lean manufacturing experience creating, implementing and optimizing operational processes while being passionate about coaching the team in effective goal setting while developing, evaluating and motivating an engaged culture. The successful candidate will act with a sense of urgency, exhibit a hands-on approach to operations management, be self-motivated and solutions minded.

SKILLS

The COO will oversee, lead and manage day-to-day operations, including profitability, processes, systems and policies while participating in long-term strategic planning. The COO will serve as the point person with customers and contractors, and must be data driven with strong organizational skills, dependability, and professionalism.

  • This position will be instrumental in helping to optimize and maximize overall efficiency and productivity through extensive process analysis and interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Collaborate with senior managers in the development of performance goals and long-term operational plans.
  • Set strategic goals for operational efficiency and increased productivity. Long-term planning to create initiatives that further the company’s overall goals.
  • Work with Director of Project Managers in the development of financial and budgetary plans and identify projects that underperform while implementing corrective measures to resolve issues. Analyze current operational process and performance, recommending solutions for improvement where necessary.
  • Seek to improve the organization’s financial performance and competitive positioning through continuous improvement of production related processes.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor day-to-day operational systems and processes to provide visibility into the goals, progress, and obstacles of key initiatives.
  • Drive client delivery to ensure that solutions are aligned with business objectives, regulatory expectations, and industry practices.
  • Draw on relationships with department heads, external partners, and vendors to make decisions regarding operational activity and strategic goals. Devise strategies for ensuring the growth of programs company wide and implement process improvements to maximize output and minimize costs.
  • Assessing and analyzing departmental budgets to find ways to minimize expenses and optimize profits.
  • Ensure departmental KPI’s are met to maximize the overall effectiveness of the total operation.
  • Ensure standardized work procedures are being followed and ensure solid employee relations are being followed.
  • Motivating employees to perform at their best through positive encouragement and incentive initiatives.
  • Identifying points of friction and working to find solutions to maximize efficiency and revenue. Identifying opportunities to expand or shift course to take advantage of changes in the market.
  • Develop and implement growth strategies including research and identification of new opportunities.
  • Hire, develop, and motivate managers and staff. Identify, create, and improve new processes/policies to enhance efficiency, increase staff productivity and improve customer service.
  • Responsible for safety and risk management to construct projects safely and effectively.

 

Leadership and Management:

The COO will lead by example, manage a team, and work closely with ownership to assist with the strategic direction of the company. A clear and open communicator effective at interacting with people at all levels of the organization. The COO will contribute to the growth of the company by developing, maintaining and managing professional customer relations and employee relationships by setting the tone and maintaining a positive and cohesive culture.

BACKGROUND EXPERIENCE

  • Must have experience in manufacturing building materials (or building materials supply) environment in the construction industry.
  • 10+ years of proven success in a Chief Operating Officer role or Vice President of Operations.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in manufacturing environment. Multi-site/multi-location is a plus.
  • Proven hands-on experience implementing Lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies (Kaizen, 5S, value stream mapping, etc.) within the construction industry.
  • Experience with Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), Global Shop ERP System, and/or Hive Project Management Software is a plus.
  • Supreme level understanding of business financials, including balance sheet, profit and loss, income statement, cash flow statement.
  • Strong leadership skills and extensive knowledge of diverse business functions and principles, including inventory management, finance, and customer service.
  • Self-motivated multitasker with a proven ability to demonstrate the highest integrity and ethical standards.
  • Passionate about coaching and mentoring with solid team building, decision-making and management skills.
  • Relationship builder with a proven ability to develop and maintain effective, long-term relationships with all customers, internal and external personnel.
  • Ability to adapt, manage and deliver results with an ability to delegate responsibilities while maintaining organizational control of operations and customer service.
  • Data driven with strong working knowledge of data analysis and performance metrics, using business management software (ERP).
  • Creative problem solver in complex situations with strong interpersonal skills, written and communication skills.
  • Must have a figure-it-out and get-it-done mentality and be highly focused, organized, and analytical.
  • Tech savvy, methodical and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Less than 20% travel is required.

 

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, management or related field.
