JOB DEFINITION

Our client is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee all aspects of accounting operations and financial reporting. The ideal candidate will be instrumental in developing and implementing systems, processes, and procedures that enhance efficiency and support growth objectives. The Controller will ensure that the company’s financial statements are accurate, compliant, and prepared on time, supporting the leadership team in making informed strategic decisions. They will collaborate with other departments, such as project management and operations, to support overall business objectives. This role requires a proactive, hands-on, working executive with a strong financial and accounting management background and a passion for continuous improvement.

This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and has 7 direct reports.

SKILLS

The Controller will be responsible for day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records. They will serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), providing financial insight to support decision-making. It is essential for this Controller to lead with integrity and work well with cross-functional teams to maximize overall business results.

  • Financial Management and Reporting – Oversee all accounting operations, including billing, A/R, A/P, GL, cost accounting, inventory accounting, and revenue recognition. Prepare and oversee the timely production of accurate financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes and financial reporting.
  • Systems, Processes, Procedure Development and Implementation – Develop, implement, optimize accounting and operational systems, policies, and procedures. Evaluate and improve accounting systems and workflows to enhance efficiency. Implement internal controls to safeguard company assets. Streamline accounting processes and workflows for better accuracy and speed. Identify areas for cost reduction. Stay updated on best practices and technological advancements in accounting.
  • Internal Controls and Risk Management – Develop and enforce internal control systems to prevent errors, fraud, and inefficiencies. Identify areas of financial risk and implement measures to mitigate them. Ensure adherence to financial policies and procedures across the organization and compliance with local, state, and federal budgetary reporting requirements.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting – Assist the CFO with the annual budgeting process and periodic forecasting. Provide financial analysis and insights to support business planning. Monitor actual performance against budgets and report variances to management.
  • Financial Analysis and Cost Management – Analyze financial data to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement. Oversee cost accounting and work with department heads to manage expenses effectively. Provide insights on profitability, cash flow, and cost control to the CFO and ELT to support decision-making.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Taxation – Ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements. Ensure compliance with tax laws and coordinate the preparation of tax returns. Implement necessary adjustments to accounting practices in response to regulatory changes.
  • Project Cost Accounting – Develop and implement systems to track project costs, ensuring projects stay within budget. Oversee project accounting to ensure accurate tracking of costs, revenues, including work-in-progress reporting and percentage of completion accounting. Collaborate with the Project Controls Manager and project managers to monitor project financial performance, including job costing, revenue recognition, and profitability.
  • Cash Management – Manage cash flow planning and ensure availability/liquidity of funds to meet operational requirements. Maintain banking relationships and monitor debt levels. Oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable processes, ensuring on-time collections and payments. Oversee the management of company lines of credit, loans, and other financial instruments.

 

Leadership and Management:

  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop the accounting team, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, project accounting, and general ledger functions.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth and development for the accounting team.
  • This position will spend more than fifty percent of their time leading and building strong relationships with the high-performing accounting team. They will empower and influence elevated performance and teach them to collaborate cross-functionally.
  • Lead and participate in numerous meetings, including financial WIP reviews, weekly accounting and department meetings, and quarterly meetings with CPAs.

BACKGROUND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • At least 3 years in a Controller or similar leadership role.
  • Experience in construction, specialty trades, or electrical contracting is highly preferred but not required.
  • Must have experience working for a privately held or family business. Union experience is desired.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing financial systems, processes, and procedures.
  • Excellent leadership and team management abilities with a strong ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment.
  • Hands-on and roll-up-your-sleeves approach. A strong work ethic and dedication to completing and prioritizing tasks.
  • Thick-skinned with a proactive and team-player approach to problem-solving.
  • Capable of working effectively in a dynamic, fast-moving environment, meeting deadlines, maintaining high productivity levels under pressure, and delegating tasks.
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities while effectively working with a sense of urgency.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, diverse tasks, and responsibilities accurately and efficiently.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
