Our client is a wholly owned subsidiary of one of the largest public global multibillion-dollar mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) contractors in the commercial market space. They are the region’s largest contractor servicing Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Headquartered in Ohio with 70+ years of service operation experience, they have 1,200 employees with 800 fleet service vehicles. THE OPPORTUNITY

This is an opportunity for a visionary CFO to have a significant impact on a successful company and help to take it to the next level. The CFO will serve as a strategic business partner and trusted advisor to the CEO, offering financial expertise, strategic insights, and operational support to achieve goals. They will collaborate closely with other members of the executive team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability across the organization bringing best practices to the company. They will be responsible for managing, directing, and leading the finance, accounting, IT, purchasing, and human resources departments.

This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer with a dotted line to the parent company and has 7 direct reports.

JOB DEFINITION

The CFO will lead by example and embody the values, ethics, and professionalism of a leader. This includes demonstrating integrity, honesty, and transparency in all interactions and decisions, and adhering to ethical standards and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will be strategic, possess strong financial acumen, and have the ability to adapt to the dynamic and challenging environment of the construction industry. The CFO should embrace change and proactively drive transformation initiatives across the organization. This involves staying abreast of industry trends, market developments, and regulatory changes, and leading initiatives to adapt processes, systems, and strategies.

SKILLS

  • Collaborate with other senior leaders on the overall strategic direction and management of the company, make key strategic decisions, drive organizational success, and develop and execute business plans that instill confidence and set a clear vision of the future for all.
  • Develop and implement financial strategies to support the company’s long-term growth and profitability objectives.
  • Influence and collaborate with cross-functional teams, providing financial insights and guidance to support decision-making.
  • Establish and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard company assets, ensure compliance with laws and regulations, and maintain the integrity of financial reporting.
  • Analyze financial performance, forecast future trends, and identify opportunities for cost savings and revenue enhancement.
  • Lead financial planning and analysis efforts and the budgeting process.
  • Communicate the company’s financial performance, strategy, and outlook to the parent company, and be the conduit between businesses.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and SEC regulations.
  • Oversee the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements.
  • Assist in the implementation of new systems.
  • Manage the company’s capital structure and oversee capital allocation decisions, including investments in new projects, acquisitions, and capital expenditures.
  • Participate in monthly project reviews with the CEO, executive staff, and project managers to evaluate job performance, assess risks and develop action plans.
  • Ensure that contracts are structured to protect the company’s interests while maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders.
  • Oversee cash management activities, including cash flow forecasting, liquidity management, and investment of excess cash.
  • Manage relationships with banks and other financial institutions.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate financial risks that could impact the company’s operations or financial performance.
  • Develop tax strategies to minimize the company’s tax liabilities while ensuring compliance with tax laws and regulations. Oversee tax planning, reporting, and compliance activities at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Monitor market and economic trends and adjust financial strategies accordingly.
  • Evaluate the costs and benefits of technologies and ensure that the company remains competitive.

Leadership and Management:

  • Lead the finance, accounting, human resources, purchasing, and IT departments in developing and optimizing the systems, processes, and procedures necessary to ensure regulatory compliance, proper records maintenance, and adequate controls in support of company operations.
  • Coach and mentor a team with strong team-building skills. Foster a culture of respect, fairness, and belonging where all team members feel valued and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and experiences.
  • Create and articulate clear goals and performance expectations that align with the company’s overall strategic objectives. This involves defining key metrics, milestones, and deliverables to measure success and holding members accountable for achieving their goals.
  • Monitor the performance of teams. Conduct regular performance evaluations, providing recognition and rewards for outstanding contributions, and addressing performance issues as needed.
  • Identify and motivate high-potential employees, provide opportunities for professional growth and development, and create succession plans to ensure continuity in key roles.
  • Encourage innovation and creativity to drive process improvements and enhance efficiency.

BACKGROUND EXPERIENCE

  • 10-15 years of progressively senior management positions in accounting or finance. A strong working knowledge of FASB, SOX, IRS, DBA, and Federal and State regulations.
  • Must have technical construction and service knowledge and experience. Familiarity with construction contract language, including previous experience with Federal contracts, terms, and construction accounting.
  • Accounting/ERP system conversion experience (COINS ERP software is a plus but not required).
  • Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), union, and/or mergers and acquisitions experience is not required but is a plus.
  • Proactive hands-on management style with an entrepreneurial mindset and agility at a strategic and tactical level.
  • Must be a humble and respectful leader with high emotional intelligence.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to build relationships with stakeholders at all levels. A sense of humor is a must.
  • 10% Travel required.

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance, or related academic discipline.
  • MBA or CPA accreditation is strongly preferred.
