Our client is a Michigan-based Veteran-owned distributor of world-class medical devices and supplies to the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, and other government agencies. THE OPPORTUNITY

Our client is seeking a Chief Operating Officer with strong financial skills or an experienced operational Chief Financial Officer who will move the needle and help take the company to the next level. The COO will play a key role in furthering the company’s mission and driving success. The role offers a significant leadership platform, allowing the individual to influence the strategic direction of the organization and shape its future growth. This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer and has six direct reports.

JOB DEFINITION

The Chief Operating Officer will be responsible for all aspects of the company’s daily operations, finance, and overall success in serving clients and government agency customers. With meaningful collaborations with the sales organization, this executive will play a pivotal role in guiding and driving the company’s growth. By growing strong relationships, consensus building, and establishing clear goals, expectations, and KPIs (key performance indicators) they will inspire and empower individuals and teams to collaborate and excel. The COO will need a forward-thinking, analytical, data-driven mindset as well as emotional intelligence and change management skills.

SKILLS

  • Partner with other leaders to develop and execute a comprehensive business plan that encompasses short-term and mid-term goals as well as a strategic plan focusing on long-term goals that align with the company’s mission and vision.
  • Optimize operations by creating a clear path to improvement.
  • Develop and implement systems, processes, procedures, and policies to optimize operations allowing for scalability.
  • Drive profitability through effective financial management, cost management, budgeting, and revenue growth strategies.
  • Develop and manage annual budgets, closely monitoring and reporting monthly to the advisory board on financial performance versus budget and committed goals.
  • Manage financial performance against KPIs, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions.
  • Present strategic plans, financial reports, and operational updates to the executive team and board of directors.
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction and operational efficiency while maintaining quality.
  • Collaborate with the sales, finance, and accounting teams to analyze financial data and make informed decisions.
  • Identify revenue growth strategies, such as expanding product lines or entering new markets.
  • Conduct regular market analysis and competitor assessments to identify emerging trends and opportunities.
  • Collaborate with IT teams to explore and implement technology solutions for process automation and data analytics.
  • Stay updated on federal, state, and local government compliance regulations related to procurement and distribution.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of compliance programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Work closely with legal and compliance teams to ensure all contracts and operations adhere to applicable laws and regulations.
  • Prepare for and manage government audits and inspections, ensuring all necessary documentation is readily available.
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks in operations and develop contingency plans.
  • Facilitate the process of ISO certification.

 

Leadership and Management:

  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a cross-functional team, fostering a culture of trust, teamwork, collaboration, innovation, continuous improvement, and accountability monitoring progress and adjusting strategies as needed.
  • Articulate the company’s vision and inspire the team to achieve organizational goals.
  • Establish department team culture, values, and goals so everyone is committed to a shared purpose.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain top talent, including managers and department heads.
  • Define roles and maximize the skills of each team member allowing them to grow in their roles and responsibilities. Promote individual development.
  • Establish clear performance metrics and KPIs for various departments and hold teams accountable for results.
  • Create training programs concentrating on optimizing the use of existing systems.
  • Celebrate wins and give authentic recognition for contributions.
  • Delegate problem-solving tasks to the team.
  • Facilitate the transfer of institutional knowledge and build succession plans.

BACKGROUND EXPERIENCE

  • A USA military Veteran in good standing (Honorably Discharged) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of operations and or finance leadership experience.
  • Government procurement or contracting expertise with in-depth knowledge of government procurement regulations and contract management and/or medical supply sector experience.
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop high-performing teams with a track record of successfully leading and scaling operations.
  • Strong communication skills and a hands-on, get-it-done approach.
  • Ability to develop and implement a strategic plan that drives growth and profitability.
  • Strong financial acumen and management skills with experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Experience in guiding organizations through periods of transformation, expansion, or change.

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s and master’s degrees required. CPA or Juris Doctor is preferred.
