THE OPPORTUNITY

As a newly created role, our client is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to oversee all financial aspects of the company, including strategic planning, accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, risk management and the development of systems that ensure accuracy and compliance. This is a strategic role focused on forecasting, data analysis, and delivering actionable insights to support decision-making. The ideal candidate will be technically savvy and bring a forward-looking mindset to improve visibility and efficiency across the organization. Ownership values transparency and seeks a CFO who will be a key member of the executive leadership team, introduce new ideas, and help guide what the company could and should be doing. The CFO will be part of the conversation—contributing financial insight to broader business decisions and leadership discussions.

This position reports to a Co-Partner and has six direct reports.

JOB DEFINITION

The Chief Financial Officer will develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the company’s goals, focusing on sustainable growth and profitability. Lead the finance department, ensuring accountability, timely and accurate reporting, and effective team management. They will assess current KPIs and processes, recommend improvements, and introduce automation where it creates efficiency. This role includes oversight of bonds and liens, which are critical to the company’s operations. The CFO will evaluate and document workflows, develop, train, and mentor the finance team while working closely with the leadership group.

SKILLS

  • Collaborates with the Partners to develop and execute financial strategies, operating budgets, forecasts, and business models aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Deliver timely, accurate, and insightful financial reporting and analysis to support data-driven strategic decision-making across the leadership team.
  • Monitor and analyze cash flow, margins, inventory, and expenditures; provide financial guidance to departmental leaders to improve operational performance.
  • Oversee the monthly close process, preparation of financial statements, and reporting for external stakeholders including banks and CPA firms. Manage and maintain successful relationships.
  • Strengthen and optimize accounting systems, processes, and internal controls to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and financial transparency.
  • Lead the company’s accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and collections; establishes and refines collection processes to drive consistency and improve cash flow.
  • Oversee and drive the strategic direction of all future IT transformations, ensuring alignment with business objectives to enhance operational efficiency and competitive advantage.
  • Develop and maintain systems of internal controls to safeguard the financial assets of the Company.
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax planning/reporting in coordination with outside partners.
  • Works closely with sales and operations teams to evaluate pricing, profitability, and market trends.
  • Evaluate and manage financial aspects of relationships with manufacturers and customers, including contract negotiations and financial terms.
  • Evaluate existing KPIs and performance metrics; design and implement improved dashboards that provide meaningful insight into financial and operational health.
  • Oversee risk management, including insurance for inventory and operations.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and professional development for the finance team to build capabilities and enhance performance. Provides recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance and business opportunities.
  • Drive financial strategy and execution of potential M&A activities.
  • Review, document, and improve core financial workflows; identify opportunities to implement automation and drive process efficiency.
  • Oversee the company’s use of bonds and liens, ensuring proper administration and alignment with project and contractual requirements.

BACKGROUND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of ten years of experience in senior-level finance position with the day-to-day financial operations of an organization.
  • Minimum of three years in the construction sector is highly preferred.
  • Hands-On leader who is strategic minded. Proven creative problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with ERP System implementation and M&A activities is a plus.
  • Knowledge of contracting, negotiating, and financial management with vendors and customers.
  • Proven ability in finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including GAAP.
  • Must have knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems.
  • Proactive approach with the ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports and projections.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with their manufacturers, customers, and internal teams.
  • An open, honest, and respectful communication style tailored to the audience. Ability to motivate teams in a highly customer centric driven organization and simultaneously manage several projects.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to participate in a collaborative team environment and facilitate group and one-on-one meetings.
  • Track record of leading and setting a course when there is no roadmap and much ambiguity.
  • Analytical thinker who initiates as opposed to reacts with an own-it mentality. Capable of operating within a high quality, growth and fun commission-based sales environment.
  • Strong work ethic, e.g., “roll-up your sleeves” leader, with a proven “take-charge” record of accomplishment.

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, and/or Business is required; a Master’s degree or CPA is preferred.
