The Challenge

As the workforce changes and adapts with the demographic shift from “Baby Boomers” to “Millennials” and beyond, our client seeks a human resources executive to lead their global personnel operations.  A division of tens of thousands of employees in scores of facilities spread across the globe requires an executive with a well-developed gravitas and EQ.  Leading a team of HR professionals, the desired candidate will have the capability to walk the plant floor and deliver structured reports and metrics to the executive leadership team and/or board of directors.  As the right hand of the President, this executive will keep him, and the management team apprised of high potentials, at risk employees and the overall demeanor and performance of the workforces.

Job Definition

  • This position reports to the Global President.
  • Manage, lead and mentor a group of ten (10) international human resource professionals.
  • Provides overall HR leadership to Global Group Office and Divisions for both union and non-union environments.
  • Ensures Group’s compliance to the Employees’ Charter. Protects the interests of the employees and the Group in accordance with company policies and Employee Charter Principles.
  • Advises the President, Executive Staff, General Managers and HR Managers on human resource issues. Works closely with Vice Presidents of Operations. Provides coaching to Executives and General Managers.
  • Participates in Group Executive Leadership meetings both at the Group and Corporate HR. 
  • Ensure all HR activities are in compliance with the laws of the countries in which the groups operate.
  • Nurture, protect and sustain company culture. Provide leadership that fosters teamwork, cooperation, empowerment and development. 
  • Works closely with the HR Corporate Team to ensure compliance and consistency in managing the Company’s retirement program, global mobility program, global job pool program, employee opinion survey process, employee advocate program and fairness committee program. Responsible for ensuring the programs are properly managed in the applicable divisions. 
  • Oversees the recruitment, training, development programs, compensation, benefits and employee relations issues, adhering to all applicable laws and regulations for the group offices.
  • Participates in most union negotiations held in both the US and Canada. Works with union divisions on labor issues and resolution process. 
  • Develops short and long term strategic plans and goals for compensation, benefit programs, based on expected changes in market and organizational business needs. Oversees salary and benefit administration ensuring all plans are competitive and equitable.
  • Formulates and recommends personnel policies and practices. Directs the interpretation and application of policies, procedures and practices. Conducts continuing reviews of all personnel policies, programs, and practices to keep Company abreast of current practices and informed of new developments and new laws/regulations.
  • Oversees the Group’s foreign services program and relocation program. 
  • Oversees the Group’s global Succession Planning Program.
  • Reviews all Group data on health and safety programs and works with divisions to implement changes and improvements when needed. Works closely with corporate staff.
  •  Responsible for plant closures and startups and for oversight of all areas associated with human resources and legal compliance. 
  • Provides General Managers and HR Managers with guidance regarding hiring processes, orientation and assessments for start-ups and major launches. Guidance and approval also required for mass layoffs and terminations. 
  • Works with Joint Ventures Partners to ensure positive employee relations (to meet the company standards) are in place.
  • Develop strategies that embrace social and electronic media as a means to augment communication methods and connect people across the company.
  • Provides leadership toward the effective development of diversity programs at Group Offices and Divisions.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related discipline.
  • 15+ years of overall human resources experience with a minimum of five years functioning in a senior human resources role and five years of managerial experience in HR.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • International experience required.
  • Proven and demonstrated HR leadership, knowledge, and record of accomplishments; “Best in Class” experience.
  • Strong human resources generalist background with in-depth experience in planning, leading, developing change, talent management and organizational effectiveness.
  • Proven track record in driving organizational culture throughout a global, multi-cultural manufacturing environment. Exposure to labor relations including knowledge of laws and industry trends. 
  • Willingness to travel internationally 15%.
  • Must be resourceful and creative, possessing the ability to work with patience, perseverance, and persuasiveness.
