The Company

Over a decade of excellence and service, our client has supplied the automotive industry through thirteen (13) locations in two (2) countries and three (3) states.   With state of the art manufacturing, assembly and delivery centers they serve the automotive OEM’s while achieving and demonstrating the highest levels of quality. Its’ 1,500 union employees manufacture and sequence suspensions, overhead systems, instrument panels, complete powertrain and dedicated material service centers.  Enjoying escalating growth and profitable operations, they are on target to achieve top line revenue of $800M in 2019.

The Challenge

The COO will lead a management team of intelligent, dynamic and veteran automotive professionals.  With a strong, positive culture and a track record of consistently launching on time, this new leader is well situated to grow profitability and expand and develop the next chapter of the company. A joint venture entity, they have a constructive and supportive relationship with one of the largest automotive suppliers in the world.  The new COO has the overall responsibility of working with the joint venture partner and managing the relationship with the joint venture partner.  A critical task for the new COO is driving growth as the next generation of the business continues to expand profitably while improving product critical skills and driving long term sustainability.  The COO will have the support of two senior industry advisors (Governance Board) and work with the two Joint Venture Members, both well respected industry leaders.

Job Definition

  • The position reports to the CEO, the Governance Board and the two Joint Venture Members.
  • Drive profitable growth and increased technical competency for the organization while strengthening the Company’s long-term sustainability.
  • Comfortable in working with all areas of the OEM’s, focusing on strengthening relationships and securing profitable growth.
  • Provide direction, strategy planning and performance for all manufacturing operations.
  • Responsible for operational and financial performance of the Company.
  • Ensures that, as the company grows, its processes and capabilities meet or exceed all industry and customer expectations for cost, quality, delivery and responsiveness.
  • The ideal candidate will be a seasoned executive with proven ability to select, lead, and support the development of people.
  • The COO will have to prove their ability to be easily recognized by employees as an approachable “Leader” who understands the value of teamwork to increase productivity and overall business performance. 
  • In conjunction with plant management teams set operational and / or performance goals for each department which are achievable and tied to long-term goals and continuous improvement.
  • Train and monitor the team’s utilization of established systems and processes to track and optimize productivity and standards, metrics and performance targets to ensure effective return on assets.

Background Experience

  • Bachelors Degree is required; MBA/MS is preferred.
  • 10-15 years of experience in increasingly complex management positions within the automotive industry, at least 5 years of plant leadership experience.
  • Broad knowledge of quality systems including, ISO, continuous improvement, Kaizen, 5-S, lean manufacturing, KANBAN, etc.
  • Able to work effectively with customers, suppliers, engineers, designers and contractors.
  • Exceptional customer focus; preference given to domestic OEM experience.
  • Team builder, ability to motivate team efforts to accomplish goals.
  • Ability to develop and implement relevant strategic objectives to attain organizational objectives.
  • High energy and resourceful leader with the capability to quickly take control of responsibilities and establish himself / herself as a credible strategic business partner.
  • Executive presence with the ability to effectively influence and drive change across all levels of the organization.
  • Outstanding leadership and communication skills with ability to present views in a clear and compelling manner and develop trust and influence as a senior thought leader with a broad relationship base.
  • Extreme comfort interacting with and influencing senior level executives.
