The Challenge

Leveraging the owners entrepreneurial spirit and industry access, the company is poised for growth and in need of an outside leader to lead the charge.  Seeking an industry expert to grow and diversify their revenue streams; the COO will be autonomous and encouraged to develop and implement strategies to promote value creation of the entity. Candidates interested in this position must demonstrate an ability to create trust and instill stability.  With a diverse Automotive OEM and Tier I customer base, interested applicants must have a proven track record of leading a logistics or trucking company to the highest levels of excellence while designing and implementing a strategic plan.  Community involvement and civic pride is a cornerstone of the company and a track record of involvement in charitable causes is preferred but not required.

Job Definition

  • The position reports to the Board of Directors.
  • Seven (7) direct reports including:  CFO, Director of Information Solutions & Sales, Safety Director, Manager of Carrier Development, Director Communications & Marketing, Vice President of Operations and Executive Administrator.
  • Provide direction, strategic planning and performance for all service delivery operations.
  • Profit and loss responsibility.
  • This position will work closely with the Board of Directors to establish long-range operating goals and strategic planning.
  • Frequent interaction with customers to ensure delivery standards and negotiated terms.
  • Ensures that, as the company grows, capabilities meet or exceed all industry and customer requirements for cost, quality and responsiveness.
  • Oversee the development and management of budgets for all locations and functions.
  • Establishes and maintains all operations policies and systems and ensures the effective deployment of these policies and systems.
  • Works with Human Resources to hire, train, evaluate, manage staff and resolve personnel issues.
  • Reviews operations and confer with operations management, technical or administrative staff to resolve deliveryy or processing problems.
  • The ideal candidate will be a seasoned executive with proven ability to select, lead, and support the development of people.
  • The COO will have to prove their ability to be easily recognized by employees as an approachable “Leader” who understands the value of teamwork to increase productivity and overall business performance. 
  • Ability to launch oversee and maximize profitability of multiple delivery lanes and customer base.
  • In conjunction with the management team set operational and / or performance goals for each department which are achievable and tied to long-term goals.
  • Train and monitor the team’s utilization of established systems and processes to track and optimize productivity and standards, metrics and performance targets to ensure effective return on assets.
  • Provides direction, development and leadership for all departments.
  • Manages the financial performance of all operations, meeting the annual budget and profit plan.

Background Experience

  • Bachelors Degree is required; MBA is preferred.
  • 10-15 years of experience in increasingly complex management positions within the transportation, trucking or third-party logistics industry, at least 5 years of leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of operational business systems; exposure and experience interpreting reports and results.
  • Must have experience managing budgets.
  • Able to work effectively with customers, suppliers, and contractors.
  • Computer literate, ability to use and leverage office software.
  • Excellent technical, conceptual, and financial skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement relevant strategic objectives to attain organizational objectives.
  • High energy and resourceful leader with the capability to quickly take control of responsibilities and establish himself / herself as a credible strategic business partner.
  • Executive presence with the ability to effectively influence and drive change across all levels of the organization.
  • Outstanding leadership and communication skills with ability to present views in a clear and compelling manner and develop trust and influence as a senior thought leader with a broad relationship base.
  • Extreme comfort interacting with and influencing senior level executives.
