Our client is a pioneer in the automotive industry who, since the early 1970’s, has been making a name for themselves within the headliner and visor markets. The organization designs, engineers and manufactures products through collaboration between product development and their customer to ensure quality output. Headquartered in Michigan, this privately held, $800M supplier has a global footprint with locations in Europe, and Mexico.

 

The Challenge

The Senior Director, Global Supply Chain is responsible for providing overall strategic and operational direction for global strategic supply chain activities. As a member of the Operations Leadership Team, the Sr Dir, GSC is responsible for the development, alignment, implementation and ongoing maintenance of all global / regional sourcing strategies that deliver the best total cost, quality and overall supplier performance.  This role will lead the company’s global purchasing team to optimize the buying power and logistics and will closely collaborate with appropriate company’s functions (e.g., program management, engineering, quality, manufacturing & finance) in support of all business objectives. The Sr Dir, GSC must strive to minimize use of company resources while maximizing profitability.

 This position reports directly to the COO, and has 7 direct reports in North America, with matrixed indirect reports in Mexico and Europe.

 Summary of Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with operations, quality, finance, engineering, IT and plant sites to create a fully integrated system moving product to “point of use” while driving out waste and achieving best total cost & quality.
  • Lead the purchasing team to ensure supply base capacities are understood and proactively managed; ensuring global strategic sourcing teams are aligned to meet program goals.
  • Leverages expertise and know-how to improve, to create and implement company-wide supply chain standardized policies, procedures and systems.
  • Demonstrates leadership by establishing credibility, acting with integrity, showing and inspiring commitment, recruiting and retaining top talent, motivating and guiding the team to achieve strategic objectives & goals.
  • As a senior leader, must uphold and live the tenets of the company’s charter, quality policy and practices, and high safety and environmental standards. Must understand and respect the laws and cultures in the countries where the company conducts business.

  • Develop the company’s supply chain / purchasing strategy that meets company performance objectives and customer expectations in any business environment.
  • Maintain compliance and minimize risk regarding environment, health, and safety (EH&S).
  • Oversee product sourcing (direct materials, MRO, packaging, logistics) initiatives to improve cash flow and drive operational and cost efficiencies.
  • Mitigate/eliminate any supply risks and supply chain disruptions.
  • Manage and report on operating systems (FAST, BOS, Capital, CEO report) in a timely manner with the utmost integrity.
  • Create and present, cost analysis, MP&L updates/overviews/strategy to all levels of the organization including board level.
  • Contributes to global purchasing strategy, ensuring support of all product group business requirements.
  • Fully responsible for execution of defined strategic supply chain and strategic sourcing actions and ensures timely and effective communications within appropriate global / regional teams.
  • Ensures data integrity of all managerial reports such us Key Measurement Indicators (e.g., KPI’s).
  • Works with purchasing leadership on supplier quality development to ensure that supplier quality issues are dealt with in a timely manner and that all suppliers are developed to meet the needs of the company.
  • Ensure supplier nominations are aligned with regional strategies.

Background Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree is required preferably in supply chain, materials management or industrial engineering; MBA is preferred.
  • Minimum 12 years of both domestic and international supply chain experience supporting a world-class results-driven organization.
  • 5+ years of experience in an executive-level leadership role or 10+ years of leadership experience with a track record of progression.
  • Automotive industry experience required; with a strong supply chain & purchasing background.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in a large matrix organization, proven collaboration with colleagues, and distinguished track record of getting results through others.
  • Must be an engaged leader, providing a clear vision, plan of action and direction to execute that plan.
  • Strong leadership skills with a “roll up the sleeves” management style; self-starter and a team player who will thrive in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment. Must welcome responsibility, challenge and decision-making.

  • Experience with total quality manufacturing management and continual improvement. Experience in lean manufacturing environments are a plus.
  • Knowledgeable of logistics, administrative processes, systems, industry best practices, standards and performance metrics.
  • Multi-site, multi-language experience required (minimum responsibility over 5 sites).
  • Experienced working knowledge of logistics & material management; LTL, 3PL or 4PL experience a plus.
  • Working knowledge of automotive scheduling tools (EDI, Covisint, 830/862/856, etc.).
  • Strong, hands on working knowledge of ERP/MRP systems (PLEX experience preferred).
  • Experience in negotiating all types of business contracts (software licenses, real estate leases, services, etc).
  • Working knowledge of lean tools – Six Sigma or Greenbelt lean training at a minimum.
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office (specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint required).
  • Secondary language preferred; Spanish is a plus.
  • Ability to travel both domestically & internationally = 25 – 40%.
