The Company

International Samaritan was established in 1995 by Father Don Vettese, S.J. to alleviate poverty among people living in garbage dump squalor in Guatemala City.  It has since expanded into a total of six countries. The organizational commitment is to foster social and economic empowerment for these communities by establishing a wide range of services including nurseries, medical facilities, food and nutrition programs, schools, micro loans and other programs.  

The Challenge

International Samaritan is seeking an energetic, committed, dynamic and innovative Vice President, Development with experience building a comprehensive development and communications program. The Vice President will assist the President in the creation of an overall comprehensive fundraising plan that will begin to build and implement a formal fundraising function for the organization. The candidate must have the ability to interact and communicate professionally and manage the entire fundraising process to obtain private support at the highest level possible.  The Vice President will report to the President.

Job Definition

  • Work closely with the President to develop an overall strategy.  Design and implement a comprehensive, result-oriented annual fundraising plan that includes major gifts, annual appeals, foundation grants and fundraising events. Take responsibility for ensuring plans are implemented and goals are achieved.
  • Provide the President and Board with the appropriate development action plans (including ROI analysis), implementation, evaluation, and progress reports.
  • Maintain on-going communication and cultivation of all relevant constituencies, including Board, volunteers, donors and other interested parties.
  • Provide the President and Board with training and direction to support organizational development goals.
  • Integrate, create, plan and implement the overall long term multi-year fundraising program strategy.
  • Personally manage a portfolio of top prospects; developing and implementing plans for cultivation and solicitation of these prospects in collaboration with the President, the Founder and the Board.
  • Develop compelling case statements for the organizations programs.
  • Work with the President in the development of proposals/grants for support and special projects.
  • Ensure that all gifts from donors are accurately and promptly acknowledged and that proper stewardship reports are generated with timely information.
  • Engage and educate prospective donors on International Samaritan programs and contributions to the garbage dump communities quality of life and economy.
  • Promote and build volunteer and donor engagement opportunities as an integral part of the development strategy. 
  • International travel may be required as well as some weekend and evening activities.


The ideal candidate will have a proven track record with evidence of success in the areas of:

  • The ability to lead the strategic development efforts while assuring all administrative donor/prospect management systems are effective and donor stewardship is handled in an exceptional manner.  
  • Superb oral, written and marketing communication skills with exceptional strategic and administrative abilities, as well as excellent planning and organizational development skills.
  • Highly developed consensus-building skills while able to apply initiative and creativity in making timely decisions.
  • A team player disposition and a hands-on style, with an impeccable reputation for operating with the highest integrity. The ideal candidate must have a proven track record in developing and maintaining relationships with a diverse group of external partners.
  • Identifying, cultivating and closing major gifts, with excellent ongoing stewardship.
  • The ability to represent International Samaritan to various external audiences.

Background Experience

  • Minimum of seven to ten years of progressively significant experience in development and fundraising, including Major Gifts, Annual Giving and Special Events as well as a knowledge of all fundraising practices.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in non-profit or business administration, marketing, communications or a related field.   
  • Ability to build strong teams in a highly collaborative environment and to develop and maintain productive working relationships with all organizational stakeholders.
  • Highly confident and energetic with a proven track record of strategic leadership and vision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to relate well to diverse groups.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic; risk-taking ability; a strong personal commitment to the mission and values of International Samaritan; mature business judgment and a passion for growing an organization.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.  Ability to set priorities, manage simultaneous priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent oral presentation and writing skills along with the ability to synthesize information and communicate it in an accurate and compelling manner. 
  • Ability to manage and motivate volunteers to work together to accomplish institutional development goals.
  • Must possess the highest ethical standards.
  • Excellent people skills.
  • Familiar with computer systems and donor tracking.
