The Challenge

The Global Vice President, Product Development reports to the Global President and is responsible for inspiring a team of professionals to achieve technical and commercial objectives.  He/she must provide thought leadership in product innovation, design, manufacturing and commercialization of specific product portfolios.  The Vice President must be a pragmatic strategist, proficient with information gathering and the analytics necessary to enable and lead product development that will support significant global growth.  This individual will be a strong communicator and collaborator to effectively lead global teams, colleagues and partners throughout the development cycle.

Job Definition/Characteristics

 

  • Position reports to the Global President.
  • Clearly communicates and executes the vision to bring new, high quality, affordable and manufacturable products to market.
  • Consistently provides inspirational leadership to the five (5) Global Product Line Directors (direct reports) to achieve desired business growth.
  • Globally collaborates and strategizes across all functional groups to leverage expertise ensuring Product growth objectives.
  • Works hand in hand with global sales teams to support business development and technical discussions with customers.
  • Works closely with R&D to initiate, organize and prioritize future development in the areas of material science, modularity, joining technologies, surface finishes, electronics integration, etc.
  • Drives innovation and innovative thinking relative to materials, products and new technologies to reduce cost while ensuring value in core products and bringing new products to market.
  • Manages the team’s expertise for global regulatory objectives related primarily to fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
  • Ensures product and validation processes are fully executed to prove out technologies so they are production ready at the required quality levels in advance of presenting to the market.
  • As a senior leader, must uphold & live the tenets of the company charter, quality policy & practices, high safety & environmental standards. Must understand and respect the laws and cultures of the countries in which the company conducts business.
  • Develops strong partnerships with OEM customers to support early engagement in the development cycle.
  • Strategizes with the Styling team to envision new concepts that will stimulate customer interest.
  • Responsible for relevant goal attainment on a global/regional basis.
  • Studies and understands global megatrends as a guide to the formulation of business development plans.
  • Supports corporate strategies that may lead to M&A opportunities.

Background Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree minimum in a technical discipline.  Minimum 15 years of Automotive, Manufacturing, Design or Engineering work related experience.
  • 5+ years of management/leadership role. 
  • Strong planning, organizing and execution skills.
  • Ability to build and manage strong, collaborative working relationships and carry high credibility with Senior Leadership.
  • Must work effectively across borders, geographies, cultures and organizations.
  • Must deliver services in a way that enhances/maximizes profitability while ensuring the team delivers in a way that demonstrates the organization’s value and competitive advantage.
  • Sets short and long-term goals that are aligned to the corporation and delegates appropriately while maintaining a fully measurable set of standards and expectations.
  • Self-starter and a team player who will thrive in an entrepreneurial environment.
