Our client is a multi-billion-dollar global diversified company that designs and manufacturers various engineered components and products. The Tier 2 automotive business unit, which exceeds $1-Billion in sales, comprises three main product segments with operations on three continents.  Their customers include all major OEMs, including Ford, GM, FCA, Toyota, and Daimler, and respective Tier 1s.

The Challenge

Poised for exponential growth, our client is looking for an experienced and innovative purchasing leader that will play an integral part in continuing to move this company forward.  Working as an active member of the Global Leadership Team the Vice President of Purchasing will be instrumental in crafting the company’s future strategic purchasing & procurement direction.  This role is responsible for the development, alignment, implementation and ongoing maintenance of all global / regional purchasing, sourcing and supply chain strategies that deliver best total cost, quality and overall supplier performance.

This position reports directly to the President, Automotive Group, and has 4 direct reports.

The ideal candidate will be an "automotive baby" having risen through the ranks to distinguish him or herself in automotive manufacturing as a global purchasing expert. Well-developed and demonstrated functional expertise with annual operating and capital spend of at least $1 billion USD is required. He or she will be adept at leading, motivating and aligning a complex global team.  Experience in systemizing / consolidating / implementing multiple ERP systems into singular system would be valuable.

 

Summary of Key Responsibilities

  • Establish, maintain and leverage a global perspective to assimilate external information (market drivers, macroeconomic conditions, etc.) to anticipate impact across supply chain and develop associated strategies and action plans to minimize exposure to risk and to maximizeopportunities.
  • Develop and ensure the effective implementation of corporate spend and procurement strategies to harness economies of scale, drive economic value, and supportbusinessgrowthwiththeobjectiveofcontinuousimprovement.
  • Think and act globally while effectively collaborating on a regional cross-functional basis. Consult and coordinate with Regional Operating Presidents to align purchasing strategies with regional and global business objectives and priorities. Identify and implement opportunities for process standardization and to drive cost out of the supply chain.
  • Establish, communicate and maintain measurable performance metrics for purchasing activities including supplier quality and delivery performance. Review and approve improvement / recovery plans. Provide regular reports (actual v/s expectation) to executive leadership andCorporate Purchasing Executive leadership.
  • Demonstrate thoughtful and calm behaviors in high stress situations with an ability to inspire colleagues and subordinates.  As a growing company in an expanding industry, the VP of Purchasing should be comfortable to lead and set a course when there is no roadmap and much ambiguity.
  • The VP of Purchasing will work closely with the company’s global purchasing team to optimize the company’s buying power and logistics and will closely collaborate with appropriate company’s functions (e.g., Operation, Manufacturing Engineering, & Finance) in support of all strategic business objectives.

 Operations Management

  • Provide executive leadership to all planning initiatives and ensure accountability for achievement of results throughout the company.
  • Solve problems with a logical and systematic approach, anticipate the implications and consequences of situations, take appropriate actions and analyze strengths and weaknesses.
  • Drive the successful execution of the strategic and high priority projects with a cross functional global team spanning the entire organization.
  • Demonstrate a progressive style that actively promotes staff involvement with emphasis on motivating, mentoring, support for innovation, encouragement of new ideas, inspire action and achieve results.
  • Contributes to global purchasing strategy, ensuring support of all product group business requirements.
  • Works closely with the business leaders to position the business for future growth, product transition, and product portfolio expansion.
  • Fully responsible for execution of defined strategic sourcing actions; ensures timely and effective communications within appropriate global / regional purchasing personnel.
  • Demonstrates leadership by establishing credibility; acting with integrity; showing and inspiring commitment; recruiting and retaining top talent, motivating and guiding the team to achieve strategic objectives & goals.
  • Leverages expertise and know-how to improve purchasing’s critical processes.
  • Creates an environment that minimizes non-conforming material including; sourcing for quality, the timely assessment of vendor / supplier quality programs, capabilities, process controls.
  • Works effectively with operations and supply chain management to ensure the timely delivery of components, subassemblies, materials and services with best total cost and quality.
  • Proven career of developing purchasing talent (both high performing & high potential); Coach and mentor identified high potential & performers.  Build diverse, high performing regional teams.
  • Participate in Purchasing Strategic Talent Reviews annually.
  • Attend supplier and potential supplier site visits as appropriate. 
  • Review, approve and negotiate (as necessary) contracts and purchase agreements with key suppliers.
  • Develop and maintain a strong compliance culture, drive the integration of best practices and ensure the best use of effective sourcing and supply chain tools, techniques and processes.

Background Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; an MBA is preferred. Appropriate purchasing certifications (CPP), are also preferred.
  • Minimum of 15+ year’s progressive experience in Purchasing / Procurement / Sourcing positions. 5+ years in a leadership role within a large and relevant multi-site manufacturing organization with global reach.
  • Experience with total quality manufacturing management and continual improvement. Experience in lean manufacturing environments are a plus.

  • Very well developed and demonstrated written and verbal English language communication skills.
  • Knowledgeable of logistics, administrative processes, systems, industry best practices, standards and performance metrics.
  • Creates a positive work environment by demonstrating and sharing functional/technical knowledge.
  • Capacity and availability for domestic and international business travel – 40%.
