The Challenge

This challenging opportunity is the “life blood” of the organization. In this key leadership role, it will be expected to pull a team together using techniques that will influence positivity and motivation. An entrepreneurial spirit and technical understanding are critical. By putting in place organized methodologies and metrics, beyond what is used today, the Director, Production Control & Logistics will direct the material flow and logistics from point of order to delivery for multiple sites. The Director will operate with minimum direction and is responsible for the implementation of Lean Manufacturing practices within the manufacturing facility. Must have strong SAP skills. Successful candidates will have a deep understanding of how to communicate with the customer, has a solid business acumen and must be willing to roll up their sleeves and be part of the solution. With well over 500,000 square feet of operations housing a myriad of manufacturing processes, the successful candidate will have an appreciation of the big picture and overall operational protocol.  

Job Definition

  • The position reports to the Chief Operations Officer.
  • Eight (8) direct reports including:  Material Manager and three (3) Superintendents. Four (4) are located in Detroit and Four (4) are located in the Ohio facility.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction: Supervise day to day activities, anticipate customer requirements, maintain good relationships and manage the launch of new programs within the plant; inclusive of customer accountability / responsibility.
  • Direct a multidisciplinary logistics team and set PC&L objectives.
  • Ensure adequate staffing, training and development of team members.
  • Monitor logistics processes: Oversee broad scope of day to day activities, prepare and propose the Sales and Operations Plan to the site management committee.
  • Assure the responsibility of the master scheduling plan with Plant Manager, improve & enhance performance and relationships of suppliers and logistics partners.
  • Monitor logistics performance and implement necessary improvement actions in coordination with other plant functions (Quality, Production, etc.).
  • Support key process improvement initiatives, including pull replenishment and structured delivery routes.

Background Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
  • 10-15 years of experience in increasingly complex management positions for multiple sites within the automotive industry.
  • Broad knowledge of quality systems including, TS, ISO, continuous improvement, Kaizen, 5-S, lean manufacturing, KANBAN, etc.
  • SAP working knowledge.
  • MRP system theoretical knowledge
  • Experience with launching new products
  • Must be able to manage multiple assignments at the same time.
  • Must have experience managing budgets.
  • Able to work effectively with customers, suppliers, engineers, designers and contractors.
  • Computer literate, ability to use and leverage modern manufacturing and office software.
  • Ability to develop and implement relevant strategic objectives to attain organizational objectives.
  • High energy and resourceful with the capability to quickly take control of responsibilities and establish himself / herself as a credible leader.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
