The Company

Based on prior successes within the restaurant and food production industry, our client has created and launched a breakthrough food product. This new company, located in Southeastern Michigan, was founded in 2013 with a vision of offering food to the consumer that is natural, clean, delicious and safe.  Their product WILL change the way we eat. To support their endeavor our client has created a Director of Finance & Operations position which will be integral to future growth and competitiveness of the company.

The Challenge

The Director of Finance & Operations will provide both financial and operational support to the President, Company and the entire leadership team; supervising the accounting and financial activities as well as functioning as the chief financial spokesperson for the organization.  Reporting directly to the President on all strategic and tactical matters as they relate to GAAP, accounting functions, budget management, cost benefit analysis and forecasting.  The Director of Finance & Operations will prepare reports which summarize and forecast business activity and the company’s financial position in areas of customer performance, income, expenses, earnings and cash flow based on past, present, and expected operations.  The position incorporates essential duties and responsibilities that involve review of past performance, management of daily and monthly activities, and active preparation in helping to build the future of the business.  The Director of Finance & Operations will be an integral part of the leadership team and will actively participate in the future visioning of the company as it grows both organically and strategically. The Director of Finance & Operations will partner with other members of the executive team to provide consultative support to planning initiatives through financial information analyses and recommendations. This leader’s responsibilities will be broad and include managing all financial and operational functions either directly or through internal department heads.  The successful candidate must be extremely hands-on and possess the ability to lead the company with little direction from ownership.

  • Monitor and manage activities in the areas of expense, cost and margin control; monthly, quarterly and annual financial goal management.
  • Partners with the President in the development of financial planning, budgets and business models to determine the prospective cost effectiveness and ROI.
  • Partners with individuals within the Executive team to provide consultative support to departmental planning initiatives through financial and operational information analyses, reports and recommendations.
  • Directs and oversees all aspects of the Finance & Accounting functions of the organization.
  • Oversees the management and coordination of all fiscal reporting activities for the organization including: organizational revenue/expense and balance sheet reports, reports to funding agencies, development and monitoring of organizational budgets.
  • Manages, develops and implements finance, accounting, billing and auditing procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting.
  • Oversees the production of monthly reports as well as financial statements and cash flow projections.
  • Monitors banking activities of the Company.
  • Ensures adequate cash flow to meet the Company’s needs.
  • Analyzes cash flow, cost controls and expenses to guide the President along with analyzing financial statements.
  • Oversees Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.
  • Ensures Company credibility by providing timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial trends and forecasts.
  • Provides recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance and business opportunities.

Background Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics or Business is required; Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Proven track record as Vice President of Finance/Operations, Director of Finance, Director of Finance/ Operations or Controller.
  • A successful career background in Finance or Operations within the perishable products, consumer package goods or distribution / wholesale industries.  
  • Ability to function effectively at both the strategic and tactical levels in the performance of this role.
  • Ability to develop a financial strategy and supporting budget plan.
  • Proven ability in finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including GAAP.
  • Financial acumen and related analysis skills, including P&L, budget planning, variance/trend analysis, understanding pricing strategies and the ability to create highly accurate revenue forecasting models.
  • Must be articulate, resourceful and focused.  One who exhibits personal integrity, patience, perseverance and persuasiveness.
  • Displays stamina, energy and is committed to personal growth and development for self and others.
  • Ten years of senior management experience.
