The Company

For over half a century our privately held client is a recognized leader in their industry.  Providing low volume manufacturing for the heavy / specialty truck and defense industries, they supply their customers all over the country with two locations in Southeastern Michigan.  Their capabilities include: fabricating, precision laser cutting, turret punching, press brake forming, stamping, welding, machining and assembly with various alloys including stainless steel, aluminum and high strength steels. Approaching 100 employees, they maintain inventory and provide JIT delivery for their long term, legacy customers.  Their non-union facilities support two shifts focused on growth and total product excellence.

The Challenge

As the owners have grown the company and desire to focus on larger strategic issues, they seek to hire a President to lead the organization into the next phase of the growth cycle.  Candidates interested in this position must demonstrate an ability to create trust and instill stability.  Empowered to lead the entire organization, they have created this new position to continue the businesses success.  With multiple manufacturing processes and a diverse customer base, interested applicants must prove a track record of leading manufacturing excellence while designing and implementing a strategic plan.  Growing the customer base as well as interacting and negotiating with established and new customers will also be a focus of the position.

Job Definition

  • The position reports to the Owners.
  • Seven (7) direct reports including:  CFO, Director of Materials & Purchasing, Manager of Quality, Director of Engineering, Manager of Human Resources, Master Scheduler and Warehouse Supervisor.
  • Provide direction, strategic planning and performance for all manufacturing operations.
  • Profit and loss responsibility for both operations.
  • This position will work closely with the owners to establish long-range operating goals and expansion.
  • Frequent interaction with customers to ensure delivery standards and negotiated terms.
  • Ensures that, as the company grows, manufacturing capabilities meet or exceed all industry and customer requirements for cost, quality and responsiveness.
  • Develops and manages budgets for all locations and functions.
  • Establishes and maintains all operations policies and systems and ensures the effective deployment of these policies and systems.
  • Works with Human Resources to hire, train, evaluate, manage staff and resolve plant personnel issues.
  • Reviews operations and confer with plant management, technical or administrative staff to resolve production or processing problems.
  • The ideal candidate will be a seasoned executive with proven ability to select, lead, and support the development of people.
  • The President will have to prove their ability to be easily recognized by employees as an approachable “Leader” who understands the value of teamwork to increase productivity and overall business performance. 
  • Ability to launch multiple customer products in a “short-run” manufacturing environment.
  • In conjunction with the plant management team set operational and / or performance goals for each department which are achievable and tied to long-term goals.
  • Train and monitor the team’s utilization of established systems and processes to track and optimize productivity and standards, metrics and performance targets to ensure effective return on assets.
  • Provides direction, development and leadership for all manufacturing departments.
  • Manages the financial performance of all operations, meeting the annual budget and profit plan.

Background Experience

  • Bachelors Degree is required; MBA / MS is preferred.
  • 10-15 years of experience in increasingly complex management positions within the motor vehicle, low volume manufacturing industry, at least 5 years of leadership experience.
  • Broad knowledge of quality systems including, TS, continuous improvement, Kaizen, 5-S, lean manufacturing, KANBAN, etc.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing systems; exposure and experience interpreting programs and results.
  • Must have experience managing budgets.
  • Able to work effectively with customers, suppliers, engineers, designers and contractors.
  • Computer literate, ability to use and leverage manufacturing and office software.
  • Excellent technical, conceptual, and financial skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement relevant strategic objectives to attain organizational objectives.
  • High energy and resourceful leader with the capability to quickly take control of responsibilities and establish himself / herself as a credible strategic business partner.
  • Executive presence with the ability to effectively influence and drive change across all levels of the organization.
  • Outstanding leadership and communication skills with ability to present views in a clear and compelling manner and develop trust and influence as a senior thought leader with a broad relationship base.
  • Extreme comfort interacting with and influencing senior level executives.
