Our client is a multi-billion-dollar global diversified company that designs and manufacturers various engineered components and products. The Tier 1 automotive business unit, which exceeds $700M in sales, comprises three main product segments with operations on three continents.  Their customers include all major OEMs, including Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota, and Daimler, and respective Tier 1s.

The Challenge

Our client is looking for an experienced executive leader who will play an integral part in moving this company’s automotive division forward. Building on their continuing growth and competitive advantage, the primary role for the President/AG is to lead in the expansion of the company’s product line within the automotive industry.  Working as an active member of the executive management team the successful candidate will be instrumental in executing the corporation’s future strategic global direction within the automotive industry.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

  • Sustaining growth, based on the strategy of a) more global vehicle production; b) increasing content; c) market share gains, and d) strategic acquisitions.
  • Continue team development from both a capacity and capability standpoint.
  • Communicate with internal stakeholders (both within the automotive group and the broader company), and occasionally external stakeholders in the investment community.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of a new global operating system (a combination of master data management, ERP, analytics and product lifecycle management).




  • Work closely with the President/SPS to develop and implement strategic plans that promote both top & bottom line growth.
  • Lead the process of implementing aggressive but realistic annual sales plans targeted to increase market share in the respective verticals.
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan to advance the company’s mission and objectives and to promote revenue, profitability, and growth as an organization.
  • Plan and direct the entire operation, ensuring the development and implementation of cost-effective and efficient processes to meet current and future business requirements.
  • Responsible for the implementation and augmentation of business plans.
  • Responsible for successfully utilizing appropriate organizational and manufacturing process strategies to ensure that world-class quality, cost, and timing standards are realized.
  • Implement sales and business development plans and programs, short and long-range, to ensure profitable growth and expansion of company products. 
  • Ensure the smooth functioning of all the operational processes in the company.
  • Responsible for developing and acting on both business and strategic planning initiatives to ensure growth and profitability.
  • Work with other business units to effectively implement initiatives and develop/promote teamwork across the organization.
  • Report on the sales and solution delivery pipeline performance-against-budget and projected future activity to Executive Team and Board of Directors.
  • Resourceful, figure-it-out-and-get-it-done mentality with a track record of creating successful organizations without the resources and reputation of a large entity.
  • Develop and maintain effective, long-term relationships with all customers and internal and external personnel.  Travels to offsite meetings on behalf of company to interact with customers as necessary.  20-30% travel is required.
  • Leverage competitive intelligence provided by the marketing research function to convert data into actionable information that allows the Company to proactively address strengths and weaknesses and competitive opportunities and threats.


  • Passionate about coaching and training the team.  Effective at setting, evaluating and inspiring individual and team goals that develop people to promote culture through results
  • Develop and lead staffing requirements, employee training, and designing organizational structures to insure optimum productivity.
  • Proven collaborator; able to leverage individual strengths to provide value to the entire team.
  • Ability to lead/manage director level management on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that maintain and maximize the overall effectiveness of the total operation.
  • Ensure all department heads are fully informed of operational objectives.
  • Set operational and/or performance goals for each department which are aggressive, achievable and tied to long-term goals.
  • Monitor department performance against performance goals to ensure that progress is being made within the organization.

Background Experience


  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required, and Master’s Degree in Business, Finance or Management is preferred.
  • Must have 10 plus years of experience working in an OEM or Tier manufacturer as a President, Chief Operating Officer, Vice President/General Manager or Vice President of Operations.
  • Financial acumen and related analysis skills, including P&L, budget planning and creation, understanding pricing strategies and the ability to create highly accurate sales and revenue forecasting models.
  • Track record of effectively leading an organization with operational insight.
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach senior-level staff to manage and develop high-performing teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and lead cross-functional teams in a matrix organization. Proven ability to work with cross functional teams consisting of highly skilled and technical employees?
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills, including executive presence and the ability to establish and maintain rapport / trust with stakeholders at a variety of levels, both internal and external to the company.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, including the ability to: present and explain complicated information in a public forum in a clear and concise fashion, leverage negotiation and persuasion skills to maximize customer satisfaction and program success, and deliver difficult messages effectively.
  • Overachiever who is dedicated, passionate, fun, organized and willing to get the job done and adaptable to a well-developed team.
  • Must be articulate, resourceful, and creative, possessing the ability to work with and adapt to all kinds of people.  Must be patient, persistent, and persuasive. Strong work ethic; e.g. “roll-up your sleeves” leader.
